Three Die in Kaduna State

Three youths lost their lives after inhaling smoke from a power generator while attempting to drain water from a well in Takau village of Jema`a local government  area in Kaduna state.

The deceased were contracted to deepen a new well that had been dug to ensure adequate supply of clean water.

According to a family source of the deceased, realizing that the huse of the pumping machine was short, one of the youths also went into the well with the power generator before putting it on. Soon after, they lost consciousness inside the well, worried over the unanswered calls from the youth inside the well the 3rd youth entered the well but he inhaled the smoke and collapsed.

Governor Yakowa Calls on People to Live in Peace

Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna state, has advised people of the state especially youths to live in peace.

The Governor made the call in a message to a prayer session organised by the youth wing of Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) in Kaduna. Governor Yakowa said the state will not survive if the spate of attacks continues.

He therefore called on the people to embrace peace to achieve meaningful development.

The Governor who was represented by his Special Adviser on Christian Matters, Reverend Joseph Hayab, reminded them of the important role of youths play in ensuring lasting peace in the state.

On his part, the National President of the youth wing of SOKAPU, Sebastian Luka expressed the resolve of the youth in Southern Kaduna to be peace makers.

Prevention of Meningitis in Kaduna State

Kaduna state Commissioner for health, Mr Turaki Kalik, has announced a new prevention plan to check the outbreak of cerebro-spinal meningitis (LSM) in the state this year.

Mr. Turaki said, residents are being sensitized through public enlightenment on preventive measures. He added that adequate medical and health personnel as well as drugs and vaccines are being mobilised to control, treat and manage any outbreak of the disease.

Kaduna Refinery Increases Production Capacity of Refining Petroleum Products

The Kaduna Refinery has increased its production capacity of refining petroleum products by about 70%.

A source from the company told newsmen that, the company has been able to fully reactivate its fluid catalytic cracking unit, which is its most important unit.

The source said, with the development it has raised its capacity to over 100 thousand barrels per production, which stood at over 70%.

The source further said that the unit that formed part of the 23 other units, would improve the production and supply of kerosene.

In a related development, a call has been made for the speedy passage of Petroleum Industry Bill into Law. This will enable refineries get autonomy that would help them increase their production capacity and obtain funds for its operation.

National Teachers Institute Kaduna Celebrate Successful Year

The year 2011 has been a successful year for National Teachers Institute Kaduna. The testimony was through proper execution of its mandate and also various awards of excellence by reputable and recognized International And National Organizations to its leadership Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu and the institution.

This message was contained during the National Teachers Institute Annual Congress For Staff And Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) meeting held at its headquarters.

During the Strengthening Mathematics and Science (SMASE) meeting, the participants which where drawn from Federal Ministry of Education and major stakeholders discusses on modalities of the way forward. Funding was the main issue as the Director-General Aminu Ladan Sharehu said most effort for the Strengthening Mathematics And Science Education (SMASE) came from  NTI funds, as of today apart from building the Strengthening Mathematics And Science Education (SMASE)  centre within the headquarters they are also building hostels.

Dr. Sharehu mentioned various awards to the congress as there too he received an award bestowed on him by West African Student Union (WASU) to Kwame Nkurma Hall of Fame. He said the award is for all the staff of the NTI which is to serve as an encouragement to redouble their efforts in the year 2012.

Dr. Aminu Ladan used the occasion to thank his Management, Zonal Coordinators, State Coordinators and Staff Of The Institute for their unalloyed support to the institution and promised that the one billion naira worth of computers given to the Institution through personal effort would be distributed to various states to that teachers can have I.C.T access.

Communities in New Kaduna Millennium City Decry Mass Demolition of Houses

Communities of Sabonwar Babban Saura in new Kaduna Millennium City have decried the recent mass demolition of their houses.

Demolition of the houses by the Kaduna State urban and Development Authority KASUPDA.

A spokesperson of the communities, Alhaji Garba Lawal while addressing the affected houses and land owners at the site, said the demolition has rendered many homeless. He regarded most of them sacrificed their lifesaving to an erect the structures that were demolished.

Alhaji Lawal appealed for intervention of the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris and Chief of Gbagyi to avoid the breach of peace.

Also speaking, a youth leader, Malam Audu Dansule advised youths to be law abiding and channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities.

When contacted the General Manager of KASUPDA, Alhaji Ibrahim Hussaini confirmed the demolition saying it was part of government plan to maintain the original master plan. He warned people not to buy or developed any plot in the area.

The General Manager explained that the authority has held series of meetings with stakeholders to ensure peaceful resolution of the issue.

Kaduna State to Plant Three Million Trees

Kaduna state government is planning to distribute 3 million tree seedlings for planting during this year’s tree planting campaign.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Zakariya Shamaki, stated this in Kaduna. He explained that this is to further boost afforestation programme.

The commissioner said the state government has initiated a number of measures to check deforestation and desertification.

He announced that recently, his ministry has embarked on measures to check illegal tree merchants. In addition to that, the government has increased forest reserves monitoring and has employed forest rangers.

Kaduna State to Evolve Policy to Ensure Peaceful Coexistence

Kaduna State Government has been advised to evolve a policy that will ensure continuous peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians in the state.

The Igala community in the state made the call through their spokesperson, Alhaji Suleiman Ahmadu, at a peace and reconciliation meeting for Muslims and Christians in Kaduna.

Alhaji Shuaibu expressed the willingness of the Igala community to fully involve their Imams and reverend fathers, pastors and community leaders in proffering solution to various problems militating against peace. He noted that no progress could be made in an atmosphere of crisis.

Another speaker at the occasion, Malam Sahabi, observed that peace between Muslims and Christians could contribute greatly in checking the security challenges in the country.

Kaduna State Governor Describes Recent Attacks as Deliberate

Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa of Kaduna State has described the recent attacks on communities and innocent citizens in some parts of the state as deliberate.

He stated this during the commissioning of a High Court complex in Kafanchan.

Governor Yakowa said the attacks were unnecessary, unwarranted, unfortunate and was only aim at disrupting peace in the state.

He assured all law abiding citizens of the state that security operatives are doing their best to apprehend and prosecute those found guilty of such crimes and urged all to remain calm and security conscious.

Kaduna State Governor Speaks On Attacks in the State

Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna state has described the series of attacks and bombings in the state as intended towards disrupting peace.

A statement by the Governor’s special adviser on media, condemns the attack and describes them as unfortunate.

He said the state has set up a peace and reconciliation committee, so as to restore peace and security in the state.

In the statement, he further added that all interim chairmen in the state have been directed to continue discussing with their respective communities on genuine peace and reconciliation.
